I played through games like Wargroove recently and I can't shake that feeling of "indie" when I play it ( and I really like Wargroove but compared to Advance Wars. It doesn't feel like any corners were cut from it being a AAA game to an indie game. I'd argue Monster Boy is the better game but it's also by far the more expensive game so if we're going on value for money (Which reviews never do) I'd say Hollow Knight is the better package.įor what you get in Hollow Knight for the price it's absolutely incredible. Monster Boy starts off very easy, gets a little challenging and then once you reach the volcano area it attacks you with everything it has. Monster also has a much better difficulty curve I think. It doesn't handhold you don't get me wrong but it doesn't leave you completely in the dark either like Hollow Knight. Monster Boy has interconnected zones and always steers you in the correct location. You're never too far from where you need to be in Monster Boy when you die and that's how I feel it should be. Especially when you play a game like Monster Boy: And the cursed Kingdom which has a more approachable game map and level design but is harder at puzzles and actual gameplay. I too can understand the complaints about the map at times. I understand the complaints about the map, the backtracking and all else but those rules make total sense in the context of what the game is proposing to you For the price you pay, you cannot ask for more. Truly unbelievable and they force you out of your confort zone constantly. The bosses are so varied and they have so many attack patterns. Except for some troll areas and bosses (just a minority) everything else is surmountable with patience and care. Difficulty: steep learning curve but pretty fair in all regards. Once you get most skills and charms it is so fluid you feel truly powerful and skillful (till you bump into the next difficulty spike that is) Characters speak an imaginary language which is cute and expressive at once. Charismatic characters and world: again, taking inspiration from the Souls series in their own way. Why I think it is great, in bullet points: I am now at the White Palace and literally pulling my hair at how insanely hard it is. You know a game is great when you love it and hate it by equal measure. The influence from Dark Souls is undeniable but they have added their own twist to the genre. i think it was somewhat long too for the genre? again, been a while.To me, it is by far the best Metroidvania ever. it's been a while since i played it, and it's way more dark souls-y than HK (at least in my memory!) but i remember liking it a lot. Both are brilliant indie titles from passionate developers who have worked hard in developing their games over many years. I haven't played the new one, but salt & sanctuary gave me a similar vibe. that part's different compared to HK's combat focus, but absolutely worth checking out. LA-MULANA is a great shout if you're down for the puzzles, as Kain-Nosgoth said. it has a great map to explore and fun combat, but the particulars are way more of an iga castlevania throwback than anything in HK. a castlevania-ass, uh, "metroidvania." but it's not really all that similar to HK. but it IS shorter-10 to 15 hours maybe?īloodstained shouts are decent in that it's just really fun. Ori 2 takes some inspiration and is i think the closest (it has the "badge build" mechanic, a more methodical combat focus than ori 1, some NPC townbuilding, etc.), but obviously has a completely different vibe. They're slightly different genres, but there's a lot of overlap that you should enjoy. Or games like Prey, Dishonered 1 and 2 and the reboot Deus Ex's. Momodora Reverie under the Moonlight is ace as well, but it's fairly short (not a problem for me, but your mileage may vary).Īnd if we're moving past 2d, the I'll also give a vote for Outer Wilds for pure exploration. Monster Boy was fantastic, but it's not a full-on metroidvania as it's more levels connected to each other, but it's one of my favorite games of the past decade. I found Blasphemy to be one of the more fun and manageable metroidvania's nothing too challenging and it's a fairly concise game. Great sense of adventure and discovery though. La Mulana 1 and 2 are great, but I definitely needed a guide to help otherwise I'd be lost forever. I'm gonna ruffle some feathers here and say skip Ori and the Blind Forest, it's a very standard and middle-of-the-road metroidvania (kind of, but not really, it's pretty linear), but definitely play Will of the Wisps, that one was miles better.
